Scrolling through social media can make it feel like everyone else is somehow ahead. More successful careers, better relationships, more money, clearer life plans, it can start to feel like you’re the only one who’s still figuring things out.
But the truth is, life isn’t a race, even if it sometimes feels like one.
And comparing yourself to others? It’s not fair on yourself at all.
A few things that can help bring things back into perspective:
Your path is your own
Everyone moves at different speeds. Different timing, different opportunities, different starting points. What works for someone else might not be your path at all, and that’s okay.
Small Progress Still Counts
It’s easy to overlook the little wins, but they matter more than they feel like they do. Finishing something you’ve been putting off, learning something new, or even just getting through a tough week, those are real steps forward.
Try shifting the question
Instead of thinking “I’m behind,” try asking “What’s one small thing I can do today that feels meaningful to me?” That shift alone can take a lot of pressure off.
What you’re seeing online isn’t always the full story
Social media is basically everyone’s highlight reel. You’re seeing the best moments, not the uncertainty, setbacks, or messy parts in between.
There was a time I’d see friends buying houses, moving up in their careers, or ticking off big life milestones, while I felt like I was still trying to figure things out, and honestly? It used to make me feel really anxious.
But over time, I realised that my path wasn’t wasted time at all. Changing directions, trying different jobs, exploring interests, and focusing on myself was actually building something I just couldn’t see yet. It wasn’t behind, it was just different.
It's important to remember that life isn’t a checklist you’re supposed to complete in the same order or at the same pace as everyone else. You’re not behind, you’re just on your own timeline, and that’s exactly where you’re meant to be right now.
